AUSTIN, TX — The University Interscholastic League Girls and Boys Basketball State Tournaments will return to the Alamodome in 2018 and 2019 the League announced Thursday.
The Alamodome has hosted the tournaments since 2015. The Alamodome is a premiere basketball venue and will host the 2018 NCAA Men’s Final Four. San Antonio was selected as the host city partly due to competitive hotel rates and attractions, which makes it the ideal destination for student athletes and fans.
“The Alamodome and San Antonio have proven to be extremely welcoming and hospitable hosts for the UIL Basketball Tournaments,” said UIL Executive Director Dr. Charles Breithaupt. “We look forward to the tournaments’ continued success and growth at the Alamodome over the next two years.”
“We are honored to host the state basketball tournaments for the next three years,” said Alamodome General Manager Nick Langella. “And, we will continue to do everything possible to make tournaments successful.”
The first UIL Basketball State Tournament was played in Austin in 1921. Gregory Gym on the University of Texas at Austin campus began hosting the boys tournament beginning in 1931, and the girls tournament was added in 1951. The University of Texas at Austin’s Frank Erwin Center hosted the boys and girls state basketball tournaments from 1978 to 2014.
