LCRA representatives present a $23,500 grant to the Round Top Rifle Association for new lighting for its community hall. The grant is part of LCRA’s Community Development Partnership Program. The Round Top Rifle Association is contributing $6,000 in matching funds to help replace the hall’s existing system with new, energy-efficient LED lighting. The new system will include several outdoor fixtures designed to lower energy costs and improve public safety in the building and parking lot. The lighting upgrades are part of a larger capital improvements project to renovate the historic hall.
“Visibility is nonexistent in the parking lot at night,’’ said Michael Sacks, president of the Round Top Rifle Association. “It is a real safety issue for our elderly members and visitors attending events or fundraisers after dark.”
The association’s charter includes maintaining the 140-year-old hall, and providing a venue for cultural and community events.
The Round Top Rifle Association hosts many area nonprofit fundraising events, including the annual Fourth of July Round Top Parade. Over 5,000 community members and visitors attend the parade, which begins and ends at the hall.
“We’re a key part of the community year round,” Sacks said. “It means a lot to me to continue the cultural traditions the organization was built upon.”
The Round Top Rifle Association was formed in 1873 to support and encourage outdoor sports and shooting events.
The community grant is one of a number of grants recently awarded through LCRA’s Community Development Partnership Program. The program provides economic development and community assistance grants to cities, counties, volunteer fire departments, regional development councils and other nonprofit organizations in LCRA’s wholesale electric and water service areas. The program is part of LCRA’s effort to give back to the communities it serves.
