On 'Kimmel,' a "thankful" John Goodman says shooting 'The Conners' without his "buddy" Roseanne was "weird"

ABC/Robert Trachtenberg(LOS ANGELES) — The Conners, the Roseanne Barr-free Roseanne reboot spin-off, launches next week, and star John Goodman told Jimmy Kimmel Monday night that he’s “thankful” she allowed the show to live on.

Roseanne was fired by ABC last spring, after a racist tweet about former President Obama adviser Valerie Jarrett — just as the rebooted Roseanne was launching to great ratings. She gave ABC permission to continue the show without her, and waived any financial compensation she would have received as the creator of its characters.

Goodman, her onscreen husband, recently revealed he was “heartbroken” by the situation, but insisted he “knows for a fact she’s not a racist.”

To Kimmel, Goodman admitted he took the cancellation hard. “[L]ast year, it was so miraculous and so unreal that when it went away it was almost like a dream. And I thought, ‘OK, I’ll be a big boy and handle this,’ and I just crashed for a couple of weeks.”

Goodman added he’s happy the show will go on. “She is missed, definitely. But after that many years it’s like a family,” and Roseanne waiving any money allowed all those people to keep working. “She gave up a lot for us to be able to do the show and I can’t thank her enough.”

“It was very weird doing the first show without her, because she’s my buddy,” Goodman recalled. “I mean we’d just sit there, and she’d make me laugh and I’d make her laugh, which is always fun because there’s always a danger of her p**ing herself,” he said to laughs.

As for her character’s fate, Goodman is keeping mum this time — after spilling the beans during an overseas interview that her character would be killed off.

The Conners debuts Tuesday, October 16 at 8 p.m. on ABC.

Two-year-old boy is Chicago's youngest gun violence victim this year

ABC News(CHICAGO) — A 2-year-old boy has been shot dead in Chicago, becoming the youngest gun violence victim in the city this year, police told ABC News.

The toddler and an 18-year-old man were standing on a sidewalk in the Hermosa neighborhood Saturday night when someone fired shots from the end of the street, the Chicago Police Department said.

Two-year-old Julien Gonzalez was shot in the neck, police said. He was hospitalized in critical condition and later pronounced dead.

Julien was at a family party with his parents at the time, according to ABC station WLS in Chicago.

The 18-year-old was shot in the leg and is in stable condition, police said. Authorities have declined to release the older victim’s name.

Julien is the 20th child under the age of 11 to be shot in the city this year and the youngest fatality, the Chicago Tribune reported.

No arrests have been made but officers held an outdoor roll call in the neighborhood Monday to get information, police said.

At a vigil held in the little boy’s honor on Monday, family friend Ada Batrez told The Chicago Tribune she hopes someone will come forward with information about what happened.

“He was a happy little boy,” Batrez told the newspaper. “Just stop the violence. And think about the future of the kids, innocent kids.”

Michael Tran/FilmMagic(LOS ANGELES) — Pretty Little Liars star Troian Bellisario and Suits star Patrick J. Adams have welcomed their first child together, a baby girl.

The couple confirmed the news on Instagram Monday, along with a photo of the newborn’s tiny hand clutching her parents’ hands.

“I couldn’t be more proud to be her mother,” Bellisario wrote. “To bring a new girl into this world and to do my best to raise her to be kind, strong and whatever the heck she wants to be.”

The two kept the pregnancy largely out of the public eye, and they both showed their gratitude to everyone who respected their privacy.

“Thank you to everyone who fought for and protected our privacy during this incredible and beautiful time in our lives,” Adams wrote. “Everyone is happy and healthy and loving every moment of this”

He added, “I could not be more excited to bring a baby girl into this world at this moment. We will raise her to be powerful, to always speak her mind and heart and to live without fear.”

A name for the little girl has not yet been released.

Bellisario and Adams have been married since December 2016.

'Black Lightning's' Cress Williams reveals he would still be a fan of his superhero series even if he wasn't in it: "This is what I would watch"

Quantrell D. Colbert/The CW — © 2018 The CW Network, LLC. All rights reserved (NEW YORK) — Ahead of the second season return of CW’s Black Lightning, the series’ star Cress Williams is sharing his thoughts on the show’s strong narrative which often touches on race, politics, and social issues affecting our nation.

Williams tells ABC Radio, it’s those conversations that initially drew him to the show as both actor and fan.

“When I read the script that was the thing that was so amazing about it,” Williams says. “Because I’m a big fan of superheroes and I wanted to play a superhero. And then I read the script and it was like, ‘Wait this is… a superhero thing, but it’s rooted in real life. The issues are real.'”

He continues, “It was like, let’s take the superheroes genre and now elevate it to another level. And so… as a father, as a man, I was so excited. Because it’s like, this is the story I want to tell. This is what I would watch whether I was a part of it or not.”

Of course, Williams is not the only one who is drawn by the “real” issues presented on the critically acclaimed series. He offers a special thanks to the fans that also feel connected to the show, because of its authentic content.

“That’s what’s resonated with them,” Williams explains. “Because that allows us to keep doing it.”

Williams says that the network also believes in keeping the series “a family drama” that’s “socially relevant.” Knowing the network is supportive of keeping the show a vehicle for important topics, Williams admits he’s relieved.

“And so I’m really happy that that happened because that’s the story we want to tell,” he adds.

Black Lightning, also starring China Anne McClain and Nafessa Williams, airs tonight at 9 p.m. ET on CW.
