World's tallest, fastest roller coaster grounded on opening day

iStock/Thinkstock(SANDUSKY, Ohio) — The world record-breaking roller coaster had a bumpy maiden voyage.

“Steel Vengeance,” the new heart-stopping steel and wood-framed monster roller coaster at Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio, bumped” another train as it was in the loading station, according to a park official.

“Steel Vengeance is currently closed while the incident is under review, but we anticipate that it will reopen tonight,” according to a statement to ABC News on Saturday evening by the theme park’s rep.

The rep confirmed that at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, “a Steel Vengeance train returning to the station lightly bumped a parked train in the loading station.”

Both trains carried riders on them, the rep said. Only four guests asked to be evaluated by a first aid team, the rep added, before they joined the rest of the riders in the park.

When gates opened Saturday there was a clear fervor by young thrill-seekers to experience three minuted of terrifying fun at Cedar Point, which bills itself “The Roller Coaster Capital of the World.”

Before the shutdown, “Steel Vengenace” — with its 205-foot peak, 74 mph speed and 90-degree drop — appears to have lived up to the hype as the world’s tallest, fastest and wildest hybrid roller coaster, replete with its own cinematic trailer.

In it, a Wild West themed revenge story unfolds and a cast of ornery, animated characters are are planted in front of the scream machine.

The trailer’s narrator called it a “menacing and twisted machine so big and brazen, the likes of it had never been seen.”Copyright © 2018, ABC Radio. All rights reserved.

Famed writer Junot Diaz withdraws from festival amid sexual misconduct allegations

Ulf Andersen/Getty Images(SYDNEY) — Junot Diaz, famed author of The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, for which he won a Pulitzer Price, withdrew from The Sydney Writers’ Festival in Australia after writers came forward alleging sexual misconduct and misogyny.

Writer Zinzi Clemmons reportedly asked Diaz a question during a panel on Friday, alleging he behaved inappropriately towards her six years earlier. Diaz recently penned an autobiographical essay in The New Yorker, in which he publicly revealed that he was raped as an eight-year-old boy. Clemmons apparently asked Diaz why he had behaved toward her that way as she asked her question during the panel.

Hours later, she continued the discussion on Twitter, alleging Diaz invited her to speak at a workshop, but instead “used it as an opportunity to corner and forcibly kiss me.”

She added, “I’m far from the only one he’s done this [to], I refuse to be silent anymore… This happened and I have receipts.”

Fellow writers responded to Clemmons on Twitter, claiming they have experienced inappropriate and at times aggressive between from Diaz.

ABC News was unable to reach Clemmons for further comment Saturday.

In a statement provided through his literary agent Nicole Aragi to The New York Times, Diaz said he takes responsibility for his past conduct without addressing any specific allegations. Diaz nor Aragi have responded to ABC News’ requests for comment.

Robb Carr/Getty Images(LOUISVILLE, Ky.) — Justify took home the Kentucky Derby crown at Churchill Downs on Saturday evening, defeating the competition on the wettest day in the race’s history.

Justify ran the race, which is 1 1/4 miles in length, in 2:04:20, according to ESPN. Local meteorologists reported more than two and a half inches of rain fell on Louisville, more than any other Derby race, making it an historically wet day.

Justify is the sixth consecutive pre-race favorite to win the Derby, the longest such streak in race history, according to ESPN. It is also the ninth undefeated winner in Derby history.

Another record, dubbed a hex by the racing community, was also snapped on Saturday. Justify became the first horse since 1882 to win the Kentucky Derby without racing as a two-year-old, ending a 136 year drought.

Hall of Famer Mike Smith was Justify’s jockey in the race.

iStock/Thinkstock(NEW YORK) — Boston Bruins Brad Marchand has twice been caught licking opponents on the ice during the 2018 Stanley Cup Playoffs, and now, the NHL is issuing a warning.

ESPN reports the league is warning that future actions such as the two previous incidents will warrant punishment and are unacceptable.

Marchard was first seen licking the face of Toronto Maple Leafs forward Leo Komarov in the team’s first round playoff series, after having previously kissed Komarov on the cheek in a regular season game. The edict was issued after he licked the face of Tampa Bay Lightning forward Ryan Callahan in Game 4 of the Bruins’ series Friday.

After the incident involving Komarov, Marchand told reporters the following:

“I thought he [Komarov] wanted to cuddle. I just wanted to get close to him. He keeps trying to get close to me. I don’t know if he’s got a thing for me or what. He’s cute.”

Marchand has not been penalized for either lick this postseason.

Callahan told reporter after the game licking an opponent is worse than spitting in their face, and hopes “the league looks at it.”

The Lightning and Bruins face off in Game 5 of their series on Sunday afternoon.
