Jewish center in New York receives second threat in less than a week

iStock/Thinkstock(ROCHESTER, N.Y.) — New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo is calling for federal and local authorities to investigate after a Jewish center near Rochester received a bomb threat on Sunday.

“The new bomb threat against the Brighton Jewish Community Center — the second threat in less than a week — is a despicable and cowardly act that will not be tolerated in New York,” the governor said. “It is especially repugnant that this latest act of anti-Semitism took place on Purim, a day that we celebrate the resiliency of the Jewish people.”

The Jewish Community Center in Brighton was evacuated Sunday while authorities investigated. According to Brighton Police Chief Mark Henderson nothing was found in the search. The building reopened later in the afternoon to serve as a warming center for those without power in the area.

Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) called the threat “despicable” in a tweet.

Cuomo said he was “profoundly disturbed and disgusted by the continued threats against the Jewish community in New York.”

“As New Yorkers, we will not be intimidated and we will not stand by silently as some seek to sow hate and division,” the governor said. “New York is one family, and an attack on one is an attack on all.”

6-year-old gave up birthday party to feed the homeless instead

Artesha Crew(CHICAGO) — One Chicago kindergartner wanted to feed the homeless instead of throw a birthday party.

Armani Crews, who turned 6 earlier this month, had been begging her parents for “a few months” to feed homeless people in her community, but her parents thought “she was joking,” her mother, Artesha Crews, told ABC News.

“I said, ‘OK, we’ll make some sandwiches,’ to which Armani said, ‘No. I want the same thing we’d have at my birthday party,'” her mother recalled.

Even when her father, Antoine, informed her that if she wanted to go through with this, she wouldn’t get a birthday gift, the girl, whose birthday was March 5, persisted.

So the Chicago family spent about $300 buying food to deliver to homeless people in the city’s East Garfield Park neighborhood. They purchased chicken, fish, spaghetti, corn, green beans, mashed potatoes, rolls, cake, cookies, fruit and water.

After Armani mentioned her plan at the family’s local church, congregation members donated other items to create care packages for the homeless.

Each care package included a toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, hand sanitizer and a snack, such as a granola bar.

Armani’s birthday party was a success, with the family feeding more than 125 people who gathered.

In a statement, the kindergarten student told ABC News, “It was nice to be nice.”

Her mother added, “She was excited. She was happy. Everybody was being fed. …One of the gentleman said he hadn’t had a hot meal in a long time.”

Now the 6-year-old wants to host another community meal for the homeless. Her mother said the family plans to return to the park “within the next couple of weeks.”

Winter strikes back: Cold hits the East Coast with a blizzard on the way

By Michelle Boncardo

ABC News(NEW YORK) — Freezing temperatures hit much of the Northeast this weekend, and a blizzard is expected to sweep through New York and Boston on Monday in what could possibly be the region’s biggest snowstorm of the season.

Meanwhile, the unseasonable drop in temperature has been mixed with sharp winds that are turning houses to ice.

An image of a New York house that had been turned into what looks like a block of solid ice on the banks of Lake Ontario was posted on the Facebook page of John Kucko Digital.

Snow and freezing temperatures also hit the South over the last few days, and Arkansas received between four and five inches of snow.

One to three inches of snow fell in parts of Tennessee and produced travel delays and driving accidents throughout the state.

The Southeast has received wild vacillations of weather in recent weeks. Warm streaks experienced throughout February caused plants to blossom early this year, but the sharp drop in temperatures caused the early risers to be frosted over with ice and snow.
